Bringing a parent to Canada has many benefits. They provide friendship, support and guidance for you and your children. They create continuity for your family and lasting memories. If they are able to come over as permanent residents, they can benefit from Canada’s excellent and affordable healthcare system.

However, there are many things you must keep in mind. There are two ways your parents can come to Canada – as a family-sponsored permanent resident or as a visitor.

Family sponsorship:

First, the good news. The current government has increased the cap on new applications for family sponsorships for parents and grandparents from 5,000 to 10,000.

However, the system is still quite restrictive. The government generally reaches its cap soon into the new year. The next open date is Jan. 3, 2017, so it is important to be prepared and submit your application to arrive on that date. When you decide to sponsor your parents you are solely responsible for ensuring that they have the necessities of life. This commitment lasts for 20 years after they immigrate. This means that the government needs to see proof of income. The income requirements depend on your family size. If your sponsored family member seeks social assistance, the government could require you to reimburse the money. You will not be able to sponsor family members until you do.

Although your parent or grandparent will be able to work, remember that it is quite difficult for a person over 65 to find and keep employment in Canada. Those who do work, often work part-time. Also keep in mind that newcomers to Canada often experience social isolation. While Canadians are polite, relationships are more difficult to form and poor weather often keeps people indoors. A lack of English or French skills could pose an even greater barrier to interaction.

Super visa:

The super visa is a good option for people who just want to have their parents or grandparents visit. The benefits are that the parent can stay for a long time – up to two years – and can enter multiple times for up to 10 years.

This will allow the parent to have a relationship with their children and grandchildren without the inconvenience of being uprooted from their home. One disadvantage is that parents who come as visitors must have health insurance as they are not eligible for provincial healthcare plans. As well, they will not be able to work.

The sponsoring family will have to commit to supporting the parent or grandparent financially during their stay.
