We have seen a lot of recent activity in Alberta with men and women starting the process of seeking a pardon. A few break and enter records were part of the pasts trying to be pardoned. On the funny side of B&E, a criminal who broke into a couple’s house started to take the TV, but instead he turned it on and began to watch. He supposedly liked the program that was on and lay down on the bed. Since it was at night he was tired and fell asleep. So when the couple came home the next day they found him and called the police. The good news is, according to Statistics Canada the 2011 police-reported crime rate, which measures the overall volume of crime, continued its long-term downward trend in 2010, declining 5% from 2009. At the same time, the Crime Severity Index, which measures the severity of crime, fell 6%. That’s good news! With that, many people in Alberta are clearing their criminal records and obtaining Waivers for travelling to the US and overseas as well. We’ve seen a rise in pardon activity in Calgary, Fort McMurray and Medicine Hat to name just a few cities. In Calgary, the Police now have an online tool that allows the public to view crimes with a Web Mapping Application, very interesting stuff.
