CAA Towing Contractors Conference
CAA towing contractors heard from Pardon Services Canada this weekend. Vice-President Chuck Mercier was pleased to speak at their annual conference in Niagara Falls.
Mercier discussed how the world is changing. Now, it is more important than ever that CAA towing contractors have a clean record. There is increased security at the border and more stringent regulations. As a result, contractors with criminal records will be facing more obstacles in their professional lives. This is especially true for those that work in the transportation industry. Today, officials are more and more concerned about guarding against risks. They are focusing their attention both domestically and internationally.
Options for People with Criminal Records
Luckily, a criminal record doesn’t need to be for life. As a society, we are all aware of the concepts of rehabilitation and re-integration. After a certain amount of time – five or ten years in Canada, depending on the offence – most former offenders will become eligible for a Record Suspension. A Record Suspension is a pardon. It seals a record and signifies that the person has been reformed by demonstrating good character during the waiting period.
As well, Canadians with criminal records are also able to apply for US Entry Waivers. This will allow them to enter the United States freely. This is especially recommended for contractors in the transportation arena. Towing contractors can benefit by being able to attend conferences or take jobs that require crossing the border.
Lately, the issue of criminal records and work has received more attention in the news. One in eight Canadians have a criminal record. In the United States the ratio is even higher. These days, companies that support their employees and contractors with rehabilitation issues are following best practices.
