Canada points system: How many do you need?

By AllCleared | 3 Min Read

Canada’s Express Entry program allows skilled workers to come to Canada and become Permanent Residents. This is generally the best way to enter Canada because it allows you to become a Canadian permanent resident, which provides all the benefits of living in Canada, excluding the right to vote. Once you become a permanent resident, you can apply for citizenship. However, in order to qualify for express entry, you need to have to qualify under the Canada points system.

What is the Canada points system?

Under the Canada points system, points are awarded for a variety of factors that the government believes will predict how well you will do as a Canadian immigrant and whether or not the country needs the skills that you have. Therefore, educated and skilled workers who speak fluent English or French have the best chance of qualifying. These potential immigrants are able to immigrate under the Federal Skilled Worker category for Express Entry.

How many points do you need?

The minimum number of points required under the Express Entry system is 67.The categories you can receive points for include:

  • Language
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Age
  • Job offer
  • Adaptability

Adaptability includes how well your spouse or partner is likely to adapt (based on language, education and experience), whether you have worked or studied in Canada and whether you have closely related family members in Canada. If you meet the minimum requirements, you can enter the Express Entry pool.

Express Entry Pool

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that applies to the Express Entry pool provides a better indication of where you stand in relation to other applicants. Under this system, you may need a CRS score of at least 400 to meet the threshold to apply to come to Canada as a Permanent Resident. The CRS cut-off score constantly changes depending on the number of people in the pool. The maximum score is 1,200.You can also qualify for additional points by being nominated through a provincial nominee program through this system. If you are invited to apply for PR, you will have 60 days to submit your application.

What can you do to gain more points?

While you can’t change your age, you can get points for language, education and work experience. Also explore the Provincial Nominee program if you already know where you want to live. Getting a job offer from a Canadian employer can also help you qualify. Are you interested in immigrating to Canada? Contact AllCleared today to find out how we can help at 1-866-972-7366.
