Edmonton Criminal Record Check: How to get it

By AllCleared | 3 Min Read

The easiest way to get an Edmonton criminal record check

The easiest way to get an Edmonton criminal record check is to go to the Police Information Check Station at the Nexus Business Park.

If you do not have a criminal record, they can do a Police Information Check that same day. The website states that the maximum wait time for those without a record is 60 minutes, but some people have reported waiting longer. While the lines can be long, this location accepts a variety of payment methods, which saves you the expense of a money order. If you don’t have time to wait, they will also mail it to you. This takes seven to 10 days.

Save the inconvenience of having to come back by visiting the website. You can print off their Police Information Check form before you go and make sure that your pieces of ID match their requirements.

If you do not need the check that same day, you can also go to any division station, unless you have a criminal record or you are applying for the purpose of being licenced to work as a security guard, locksmith or loss prevention officer.

This station can also serve people from some outlying communities policed by the RCMP. Check the list on the website. If you do not live in one of the communities listed or you don’t want to visit the Police Information Check Station, you can go to the local RCMP detachment.

What is a Police Information Check?

The Police Information Check is a more thorough check than a standard criminal record check. It involves a search of the national database for criminal convictions and active conditional and absolute discharges. It also involves a search of court records which will turn up any unresolved records. If you have a pardon or Record Suspension, your record will not be disclosed.

The cost for an employment record check is $70. If you are applying for a Record Suspension, you will need a local police check. This check is also $70. Volunteer checks are $15 and education/practicum checks are $50.

What other types of criminal record checks are there?

A basic criminal record check can be performed by a third-party service provider. This type of check will tell you or the employer or organization requesting the information if your record is clear or not clear.

The most thorough type of record check is the Vulnerable Sector check. This type of check can only be performed by a local police detachment. It can’t be done by a third party. As well, the information will be released to you, and then you can decide if you want to show it to the employer or organization.

A Vulnerable Sector check is required when working with children or people who may be vulnerable due to age, disability or illness. The results can disclose sexual offences even if a pardon has been granted.
